- What is Laser Engraving?
Laser Engraving or etching is a process that is the result of combining leading edge laser technology with cutting edge photo imaging and artistic creativity. Engraving is done with a 30 watt, sealed CO2 laser producing near photographic quality images in a variety of surfaces including marble, granite, glass, wood, and acrylic. Essentially, the laser super heats the surface of the material causing precise microscopic explosions. This action removes the polished surface in varying degrees. Depending on the contrast desired, the laser's computer program determines the number of explosions required. For example, a high resolution image requires the laser to fire up to 300 times per linear inch or 90,000 times per square inch. The type of material used will determine the power and time it takes to laser engrave the image. The original picture will be manipulated with graphics art software to give the best final image on the material used. The laser removes the top layer of the surface down to .005 of an inch and allows an almost photo quality image.

- How long will the laser engraving last?
Depending on the material and the application an etched image can last forever. Granite is one of the hardest materials on earth and recommended for outdoor use. We can recommend the best type of stone for your engraving depending on the intended use.

- Can the items be used outdoors ?
We recommend granite be used as the material for outside exposure to the elements. Granite should maintain the image for many years. It is also our recomendation that color not be used outside.

- How do I upload more than 1 picture ?
Although this is an unusual situation, it does occur and can be handled by email. Just attach the additional picture(s) in an email to sales@lasergraving.com and reference the email in the Instructions section of the item.

- What if I don't have my picture in digital format ?
If you are not in a big hurry, you can mail us the picture through regular mail. We will scan the image and create the simulation. If you don't have an email address, we can mail or fax you the simulation. You can also use a local Kinko's or UPS store to scan and email the image.

- Can I combine two or more images.
Yes, we can digitally combine more than one image on a single engraving. In this case email the pictures to sales@lasergraving.com and reference it in the comments section of the order.

- Will I see a simulation before my order is engraved ?
Yes. Our engraving software will produce a simulation before the engraving process. This image will be emailed for your approval before engraving begins. If you do not have access to email, the image will be printed and mailed to you. As a final option, the image can also be faxed to speed up the process in the absence of email.
